It was all about preparing our bodies to react quickly in life-or-death situations—like running from a bear, tiger. lion OH MY. But today, that same instinct is often triggered by much less dangerous events, like responding to an email, dealing with a stressful meeting, or managing tight deadlines. While the fight-or-flight response is still important, it’s often overactivated in our modern world, leaving us feeling drained, anxious, and disconnected from not only ourselves but others around us.

We believe our clients are change-makers—people who, through their own transformation, create a positive ripple effect in their relationships, careers, and communities. Science meets soul:

Breath, Sound and Meditation are practices rooted in ancient traditions.  Sound was used not just for wellbeing or relaxation— but for ceremony, connection, and consciousness.

Civilizations from Egypt to Tibet used gongs, bowls, and harmonic frequencies to realign the body and spirit.

In ancient Greece, Pythagoras, philosopher and mathematician, pioneered the use of sound for wellbeing and developed the Pythagorean tuning system, the foundation of Western music theory.

Today, science and specifically neuroscience is finally catching up — showing us how sound shifts brainwaves, how Breathwork may calm the nervous system, and holistically how these practices may assist in wellbeing and relaxation.

Somewhere along the way, we forgot. As we move further and further away from our history – we forget and start to call it fiction or false.

This is your invitation to remember.
To return to your breath.
To feel the sound.
To meet yourself in stillness.
To reclaim your frequency.

FAQs

This is a frequently asked question section

1. What is breathwork, and how does it work?

Breathwork is a guided practice that uses intentional breathing techniques to help regulate the nervous system, reduce stress, and promote mental clarity. It works by increasing oxygen flow, activating the parasympathetic nervous system, and allowing the body to release stored tension and emotions.

2. What are the benefits of breathwork?

Breathwork can help reduce stress and anxiety, improve focus, enhance emotional resilience, support better sleep, and promote a sense of deep relaxation. It can also help release emotional blockages and improve overall well-being.

3. What can I expect in a breathwork session?

Each session begins with a short introduction and intention-setting, followed by guided breathwork techniques. You’ll be lying down or seated comfortably while being guided through various breathing patterns. Sessions end with integration time, allowing you to process and absorb the experience.

5. Do I need any experience to join a breathwork session?

No prior experience is needed! Breathwork is accessible to everyone, and sessions are tailored to meet you where you are, whether you're a beginner or experienced in the practice.

6. What should I bring to a session?

Wear comfortable clothing, and bring a yoga mat, a blanket, and a pillow if you like. Some people also like to bring an eye mask and water to stay hydrated.

7. How will I feel after a session?

Responses vary from feeling deeply relaxed and calm to energized and uplifted. Some may experience emotional releases, while others simply feel lighter and more connected to themselves.

8. Can I do breathwork on my own?

Yes! While guided sessions provide structure and support, you can integrate simple breathwork techniques into your daily routine for ongoing benefits.

breathwork and pregnancy - in all trimesters

Breathwork, especially certain intense techniques like holotropic breathing, rebirthing breathwork, or rapid-paced breathing, can affect oxygen and carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels, which may pose risks during pregnancy. Here’s why:

1. Oxygen & CO₂ Balance (Hypocapnia & Hyperventilation Risks)

  • Rapid, deep breathing can cause hyperventilation, reducing CO₂ levels in the blood (hypocapnia).

  • Low CO₂ can cause blood vessels to constrict, potentially reducing oxygen delivery to the brain and placenta, which may impact the baby.

  • This can alter fetal oxygen supply, possibly leading to dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting in the mother.

2. Blood Pressure & Circulation Changes

  • Breathwork can stimulate the autonomic nervous system, sometimes leading to blood pressure fluctuations.

  • Certain techniques may trigger a drop in blood pressure, reducing circulation to the uterus.

3. Emotional & Physiological Stress Response

  • Some breathwork practices stimulate deep emotional releases, which can elevate stress hormones (like cortisol and adrenaline).

  • While occasional stress responses are natural, prolonged intense states could affect fetal development.

4. Uterine Contractions Risk

  • Breath retention and intense diaphragmatic activation could potentially stimulate the vagus nerve, leading to mild uterine contractions.

    Safe Alternatives for Pregnant Individuals

  • Gentle, controlled breathing techniques (e.g., diaphragmatic breathing or nasal breathing) are generally safe and beneficial.

  • Always consult a doctor or midwife before starting breathwork during pregnancy.

This is a frequently asked question section

9. is breathwork safe for everyone?

The great debate! Some people will say YES and some people will say NO and sometimes our circumstances are dictated by our Insurance Companies and are out of our hands.

At Sunwell Wellbeing we do not offer breathwork sessions for people with any of the below medical conditions or in the below situations:

  • Pregnant individuals in any trimester (techniques like holotropic breathing, rebirthing breathwork, or rapid-paced breathing, can affect oxygen and carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels)

  • Have serious cardiovascular conditions or heart issues

  • Have uncontrolled high or low blood pressure

  • Those with severe mental health conditions (e.g., schizophrenia, Bi-polar Disorder, untreated PTSD)

  • Individuals with pacemakers

  • People prone to seizures or epilepsy

  • Are recovering from recent surgeries, serve illnesses or injuries

  • Anyone under the influence of drugs or alcohol

Please note that some insurances do not cover the above situations and conditions and this is out of our hands. If any of the above apply, please reach out for a consultation and we can work with you to find a session that can align with your individual situation.

HOW Breathwork can impact the above situations and medication conditions:

1. Cardiovascular Conditions (Heart Disease, High Blood Pressure, History of Stroke)

  • Intense breathwork can temporarily alter blood pressure and increase heart rate, which may put additional strain on the heart and circulatory system.

  • Rapid breathing can cause blood vessel constriction, potentially affecting circulation and increasing the risk of dizziness or fainting.

2. Respiratory Conditions (Asthma, COPD, Long COVID, or Other Lung Issues)

  • Deep or rapid breathing techniques can hyperventilate the lungs, leading to lightheadedness, shortness of breath, or tightness in the chest.

  • Those with asthma should be cautious, as strong breathwork techniques may trigger an episode.

3. Epilepsy or Seizure Disorders

  • Hyperventilation can change oxygen levels in the brain, which may increase seizure risk for those with epilepsy or a history of seizures.

  • Some breath-holding techniques (like Wim Hof Method) may be particularly risky.

4. Pregnancy

  • Intense breathwork can alter oxygen and CO₂ balance, which may reduce oxygen flow to the placenta.

  • Some techniques involve breath retention or strong abdominal contractions, which may stimulate uterine contractions.

5. Severe Anxiety, PTSD, or Panic Disorders

  • Some breathwork techniques trigger deep emotional releases, which can be overwhelming for those with PTSD or high anxiety.

  • Hyperventilation-based practices may mimic panic attack symptoms (like dizziness, tingling, or breathlessness), which can increase distress.

    7. Recent Surgery or Major Medical Conditions

  • Breathwork can stimulate the nervous system, which may impact recovery after surgery or interfere with certain medical conditions.

  • If you’ve recently had surgery, consult your doctor before trying deep breathwork techniques.

8. Neurological Conditions or Brain Injuries

  • Rapid breathwork can affect cerebral blood flow, which may be risky for those recovering from traumatic brain injuries, concussions, or other neurological conditions.
